Afternoon at Lochabar a Magical Event
Nearly 100 supporters of NPC gathered at Ted and Judee Lyon’s property, Lochabar, on Sunday, May 23, 2010. The afternoon was spent socializing with old and new friends, touring the property’s geologic features, enjoying the wildflowers and plant life, and tasting treats provided by local volunteers and businesses.
Dr. John Way is a semi-retired geologist who previously worked for the Pennsylvania Bureau of Topography and Geology and taught at Lock Haven University. Dr. Way gave two tours highlighting the property’s sink holes, karst geology, and explaining the significance of the Big Spring.

Sue Sprout is a retired school teacher who still works as an environmental educator in Pennsylvania and Florida (on Sanibel Island). She guided two walks that explored the property’s plant life. While many Spring wildflowers were done blooming for the season, the property is home to other plants and flowers for the attendees to explore.

Those supporters in attendance who did not participate in tours were treated to the music of Carl and Opal Schlappi. Carl and Opal played traditional country with twang, and gospel favorites through out the afternoon. The damp weather didn’t dampen their spirits and they made good use of their cardboard stage. (you don’t want to be standing on wet ground while playing electric guitars)
If that wasn’t enough to keep you entertained, there was plenty of food and treats to try. The committee worked hard in the kitchen and in requesting donation from local restaurants. Special thanks for donating appetizers, sweet treats and beverages to:
