Marsh Creek Watershed Protection Project

tree=
an ongoing project to protect over 1,000 acres

The approximate boundary of the project area runs along Marsh Creek from Ansonia to Cobble Knoll outside of Wellsboro. The goal of the project is to protect crucial wetlands, wildlife habitat, and areas critical to the water quality of Marsh Creek, which flows into Pine Creek (a segment of which is a Pennsylvania Scenic River, and is a Chesapeake Bay headwater), and the local ground water supply. In particular, this area provides habitat for thousands of migrating and nesting birds each year. The priority wetlands are threatened by draining, filling, improper management, subdivision and changes in ownership, and encroaching development.

The Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy continues to develop strong support for the protection of this critical area in both the public and private sectors of the community. The ultimate goal is to protect this area through conservation easements and fee-title transfers. This project is also known as “the Muck.”

See Pensyl Project for information on a completed project in this area.
