The Mengees spent many hours hiking and camping with their family on the acreage they owned along Painter Run in Gaines Township. The clear, cool stream and the dense canopy of hemlock provided them, their children and grandchildren with a place to enjoy each other's company.

When the time came to sell the property, they decided to see if the Tioga State Forest might be interested.  NPC purchased the property and subsequently transferred it to DCNR to become part of the Tioga State Forest. The property is close to Pine Creek and the Bee Tree Ski Trial.
